On Sunday, Dec. 10, at 5 p.m., a diverse group of journalists, friends, and supporters of press freedom gathered at Seattle’s Jose Rizal Park for a solemn vigil. The event aimed to honor and draw attention to the tragic loss of journalists worldwide, with a specific focus on those who have lost their lives while reporting in Palestine.
The somber gathering brought together individuals from various media outlets and advocacy groups. All those in attendance were united in their unwavering commitment to upholding press freedom and remembering the journalists who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for their dedication to the truth. Speakers at the vigil highlighted the critical role journalists play in ensuring that the public is well informed about events that shape our world. Speakers also spoke of the risks journalists face daily, from physical danger on the front lines to censorship and persecution by authoritarian regimes.
The gathering was also an opportunity for attendees to express their solidarity with journalists in Palestine and other regions where press freedoms are under threat. Signs and banners bearing messages of support for journalists were displayed throughout the park.
As the sun set over Jose Rizal Park, attendees lit candles and observed a moment of silence to honor the fallen journalists. The vigil concluded with a call to action. Individuals, governments, and organizations worldwide were urged to do more to protect journalists and ensure their safety, both in conflict zones and within societies where press freedoms are under threat.
