EdCC dance club empowers individual expression

Don’t miss out! The Edmonds Community College’s Dance/Performance Club kicks off their season with practices starting next week. The club is a fun way to get involved on campus as well as providing an entertaining yet effective way to exercise. Currently, there are around seven members that attend the club, but President Tabitha Edwards and Vice President Desiree Fuller are counting on more members joining when their meetings start next week. Don’t pass up this excellent opportunity to meet new people from EdCC who share the same interest in dance like you!

The Dance Club has some fascinating things in store for this year’s members. The club is planning to perform at some very exciting events this year including the annual International Night, Spring Fest, and even the upcoming Halloween Dance, all of which are hosted by EdCC. Edwards also said that the club might be “coming up with our own events” this year which is very exciting. Make sure to be at these events to see the dance club in action!

During an interview, Edwards discussed some of her roles as President of the dance club here at EdCC. These include “coming up with choreography and keeping track of the members of the club, all the behind the scenes stuff,” said Edwards.

While Edwards takes care of her duties as President, Vice President Fuller plays a significant role in keeping the club in order. She creates choreography, keeps track of emails, coordinates costumes for performances and double checks to make sure everything is in place for the club to run smoothly.

Edwards has been President of the dance club for around a year now. She and Fuller were both part of the dance team at Lynnwood High School before attending Edmonds CC. Their experience on their high school dance team inspired them to continue dancing through college, pushing them to join the club at Edmonds and eventually become the leaders of the club.

The dancers both shared what they like about being part of the club, “I just always loved dance,” said Edwards. Fuller explained further, “It’s an outlet for us.”

Dance plays a vital role in the lives of the leaders and members of the club as well as in culture today. Edwards explained the importance of dance in her own life, “personally, dance is more of an expression or a personal statement.” She uses dance as a way to express herself and to learn more about herself as an individual. Dancing is a way for her to declare something or to make a statement about whatever she is trying to display through individual pieces of choreography.

Dance is also capable of displaying a lot about specific cultures. It showcases the traditions and norms of different cultures in society. It has been a part of cultures all over the world for a very long time, and it is exciting to learn about all the different types of dance used in different cultures.

The Dance Club performs at EdCC’s annual International Night. At this event, you might be able to learn about these different cultures. In addition, you will also get to see how hard the dance club has worked for their performance that night.

As a dancer myself, I can agree that dance is an amazing way to express how you are feeling in the moment, as well as releasing emotions that might be bottled up inside of you. Dance can also be used to make a social, political, or cultural statement. It can communicate things that may not be able to express in words or on paper. There are different moods produced by each style of dance. Each of these styles can cause the viewer to feel something different inside. For example, a lyrical or modern piece of choreography can be more dramatic or emotional while a hip-hop piece is upbeat and happy. The dance club offers many different opportunities for members to try all various forms of dance.

Edwards and Fuller would like to encourage students at EdCC to join the Dance and Performance Club this year. It is an excellent opportunity to bond with other students at the college. “It is something you can do to explore deeper into yourself,” said Edwards. “With an added bonus of exercise,” added Fuller.

Joining the dance club provides you with a great, positive environment to express yourself without judgment and maybe push yourself out of your comfort zone a little if you have never danced before. If you have experience with dance or even if you have never set foot on the dance floor, the Dance Club will welcome you with open arms, and it is an awesome way to get involved, try something new, and meet people who love to dance as well.
