On Dec. 5, the Bellevue Police Department (BPD) swiftly responded to a concerning call regarding a knife-wielding man. The incident occurred at the Kelsey Creek Shopping Center at approximately 6:35 p.m., during which a BPD officer discharged their weapon, resulting in the fatality of the man involved.
Upon receiving the report of the knife-wielding individual, the BPD dispatched multiple officers, who convened on the 15500 block of Main Street, as detailed in a media release from the Independent Force Investigation Team – King County (IFIT-KC). At least one officer approached the 44-year-old man in question.
According to the BPD’s account of events, the man initiated an advance toward one of the BPD officers. In response to the perceived threat, the officer discharged their firearm, ultimately striking the individual. While BPD officers on scene promptly initiated life-saving measures, and contacted the fire department, the man’s injuries proved fatal, and he succumbed to them at the scene, as confirmed by IFIT-KC.
In an official statement released on Dec. 6, it was disclosed, “The Bellevue PD Officer who fired his weapon has been placed on administrative leave pending this investigation.”
The circumstances surrounding this tragic incident are now the subject of a thorough investigation led by IFIT-KC, whose aim is to shed light on the events leading to the use of deadly force by a Bellevue police officer.
